Why Honey Matters

Growing up, honey was a staple food in our daily life. It was there all year round used for baking, cooking and medicinal properties.

I lived on a farm where we grew our food. Most people in the village had farming specialties, some were pig farmers, some had poultry and some grew vegetables. There were fruit farmers and one remote farm only grew cucumbers and tomatoes. This meant that there was lots of local food trading. When harvest season was approaching everyone knew who to contact for potato, apples, meat or honey.

Luckily for us, the old couple who were amazing beekeepers lived 30 minutes away from us across the field. My mum would always order a bucket or two of honey in exchange for pickles. That’s right she was known for pickles and her recipe was loved by many. A bucket of honey was literally a small 2 litre bucket filled with set honey.

I remember all the concoctions we had that involved honey, my least favourite was warm milk, honey and crushed garlic during the flu season and winter months.

I continue to enjoy honey and it is part of our larder as a staple. I seem to have carried on with my heritage and traditions without realising it. It’s only recently that I thought about it. Silvia, a wonderful woman and a founder of Honey Heaven, approached me to collaborate. It has been so thrilling to taste all different honeys. The new world of honey is infused with flavours, spices and medicinal mushrooms. Wow!

Today I am sharing my love for Royal jelly, propolis and bee pollen infused honey. This is a powerhouse product that has so much to offer all year round.  Due to its health benefits, antioxidant status and anti-inflammatory properties is best to be used daily as part of a regular diet, including a drizzle or a dollop in your porridge, yoghurt, granola or warm water/tea. Do not cook it as heat will reduce its potency.

The potential benefits:

Bee Pollen:

  • Can ease Menopause by relieving hot flashes and night sweats.

  • Fights Inflammation

Royal Jelly:

  • Supports skin health by boosting collagen production and promotes wound healing

  • Promotes blood sugar balance

  • May boost memory and focus

Propolis:

  • High in antioxidants

  • Supports healing

Here is my favourite way to include this honey daily at breakfast:

  • 5 large tablespoons of natural yogurt, I enjoy Alpro Greek style dairy free due to high protein content and smooth beautiful texture, any other alternative is also great but check out protein content and never go fat free.

  • 3 tablespoons of homemade granola or any low sugar option

  • 3 tablespoons of nuts and seeds mix (I make my own, make sure to include chia and flax)

  • Handful of berries

  • 1 teaspoon of Royal Jelly, Propolis and Bee Pollen Honey.

It’s simple, nutritious, full of antioxidants, protein and great for maintaining those blood sugar levels.
